DiSC Styles Explained

The DiSC system identifies the unconscious patterns in our behaviours. Though we are unaware of them, we all use a particular pattern of behaviours in everything we do. We often call this “personality”. Sometimes these preferences work well and deliver good results, sometimes not!

In the DiSC model, each letter describes one of the four main unconscious personality types.

For example, imagine you are attending a business conference as a break starts, delegates stream out of the hall towards the lifts.

You notice one person striding out ahead of the crowd. They march straight into the lift and press the ‘door close’ button, not once but repeatedly. They seem oblivious to the people following who could also have got in their lift.

This person has the ‘D’ or ‘Dominance’ profile.

The next person uses the lift as an opportunity to make new friends. They start a conversation, despite the obvious reluctance of the other passengers. They even hold the lift doors to finish telling their anecdote as other passengers leave at their floors.

This person has the ‘i’ or ‘Influence’ profile.

This next person mingled in with the crowd. They used the ‘open door button to help other passengers get in. They even came out of the lift to help one lady get her cases in. Then, as the lift was now packed, they volunteered to use the stairs.

This person has the ‘S’ or ‘Support’ profile.

The final person you observe quietly followed behind the main crowd. Mentally they calculated the combined weight of the waiting passengers and compared this with the posted maximum weight sign. Privately they decided to take the next lift.

This person has the ‘C’ or ‘Conscientiousness’ profile.

Normally, the way we respond to each of these four styles would be conditioned by our own profile type. If we were similar in our profile types, we would most likely accept their behaviour at face value. However, if we were different, especially if we were opposite on the DiSC quadrants then we would perceive the other person in a negative light.

But what if, with your DiSC training you recognised in what you had just briefly observed each person’s profile, what drives them and know how to communicate and motivate them most effectively.

So, rather than thinking negatively about each person, we understand their behaviours. And know how to adapt our own behaviour to put the other person at ease. To make a stronger connection to work more effectively with them and to overcome any conflict that arises.
